Family House “Under One Roof” Campaign Concludes, Capital Fundraiser Exceeds Goal

Funds used to acquire, renovate former hotel for patients, families being treated at Pittsburgh hospitals.

PITTSBURGH, PA (August 6, 2024) – Family House has announced the successful conclusion of its Under One Roof: The Campaign for Family House capital fundraising efforts. Family House, the nearly 41-year-old nonprofit that provides safe, convenient, and affordable lodging to patients and families while they are in Pittsburgh receiving medical care, exceeded the organization’s $16 million campaign goal by raising $16,540,000.

“This achievement marks a significant milestone in Family House’s mission to provide a ‘home away from home’ for patients and their families undergoing medical treatment in Pittsburgh,” said Executive Director John Plante. “By consolidating the previous four locations into a single facility, Family House is well positioned to operate more efficiently while meeting the needs of the thousands of guests we annually serve.”

Family House Board Chair G. Reynolds “Renny” Clark added, “The funds raised during this historic campaign enabled us to purchase and transform the former Courtyard by Marriott hotel into a sustainable facility that will better serve our hospital partners, while maintaining the financial and operational flexibility needed to adapt to the ever-changing needs of Family House guests and the evolving healthcare industry.”

The move into a single, state-of-the-art facility ensured Family House’s long-term sustainability through consolidated operations and reduced capital expenditures. Located within convenient access to Pittsburgh’s world-class hospitals, the 121-room facility has been designed to strengthen the interactions between patients, their caregivers, and the regional healthcare partners Family House serves. The new location also helps Family House meet the needs of an increasingly specialized population, including those who are immune-suppressed or undergoing long-term recovery from transplant surgeries, or cancer or stem cell treatments.

“We cannot thank our incredibly generous donors enough for their steadfast support and continued commitment to Family House,” said Glen Feinberg, Chair of the Under One Roof Campaign and a member of the Family House Board of Directors. “From lead gifts made by UPMC, DSF Charitable Foundation, the John M. and Gertrude E. Petersen Foundation, and Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin, to more than 100 other foundation, corporate, and individual benefactors, Family House’s community of friends and partners came together to ensure that our goal was achieved, and our future secured for decades to come.

“Family House is now ideally positioned to continue its legacy of care, ensuring that patients and their families can focus on healing and recovery during their most challenging times.”

Key features of Family House’s new facility include:

  • New room designs tailored to the needs of immune-suppressed individuals.
  • Additional multipurpose and communal spaces to foster guest and volunteer interactions and support program delivery.
  • Advanced technological infrastructure to support telemedicine needs and digital engagement for guests, caregivers, healthcare partners, volunteers, and staff.
