PITTSBURGH, PA (November 22) In January of 2024, the Duffy family’s lives were turned upside down when nine-year-old, Lucy, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The news hit hard, bringing with it an overwhelming sense of fear and uncertainty that seemed to permeate every corner of their world. Over the following months, they found themselves consumed by a whirlwind of medical appointments, surgeries, and treatments, with Lucy enduring outpatient chemotherapy five days a week.
The Duffy family, hailing from Prospect, Pennsylvania, endured an hour-long commute to UPMC Children’s Hospital each day for appointments. For Lucy’s parents, the physical and emotional toll of these long trips was exhausting. But it was especially difficult for Lucy’s younger siblings—a five-year-old and a toddler—who didn’t fully understand why their sister was so sick, or why their daily routines had been disrupted. The weight of it all was beginning to feel too much to bear.
Just when the burdens seemed overwhelming, a compassionate social worker from UPMC Children’s Hospital introduced the Duffy family to Family House– describing it as “the best place in the world.”
From the moment the Duffy family walked through the doors of Family House, it was clear why the social worker had spoken so highly of the organization. The staff and volunteers greeted them with warmth and kindness, offering a sense of comfort and belonging in a time of crisis. The Duffy family were able to stay at Family House at a reduced rate of just $35 per night, thanks to the Family Assistance Program. This financial relief was a gift at a time when expenses seemed endless, easing one of their biggest burdens during an already difficult journey.
Family House quickly became their “home away from home.” The nourishing meals prepared by volunteer groups were a source of comfort, especially after long, grueling days at the hospital. Lucy found a special friend in “Blue Suede Shoes”, an Animal Friends therapy dog who brought a spark of joy to her days. Her parents watched with gratitude as Lucy’s face lit up whenever she saw her special furry friend, a rare moment of happiness amidst the challenges.
The staff at Family House went above and beyond to accommodate the family’s needs. They worked with the parents to adjust their reservations as Lucy’s health and their schedule fluctuated, always with empathy and understanding. The Daily Healthy Breakfast Program ensured that the family started their days with proper nutrition, and thoughtful snack bags made with donated items brought unexpected smiles to Lucy’s face. When transportation to and from the hospital was needed, Family House provided reliable rides, lifting a huge source of stress from the family.
This experience left a lasting impression on the family. They felt a deep sense of gratitude for the support and comfort they received at Family House, and it inspired them to share their story with others families experiencing similar challenges.
The Duffy family’s story is just one of many that highlights the vital role Family House plays in supporting families during some of their most difficult times. Family House offers comfort, community, and a sense of normalcy when families need it most. These essential services are a lifeline for families traveling to Pittsburgh for critical medical care, helping to ease their burdens and provide hope.
