Gift will help underwrite construction of the Kamin Conservatory
PITTSBURGH, PA (December 17, 2024) – Family House has announced that it is the beneficiary of a grant from the Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Family Foundation to provide underwriting support for the construction of a new front porch at the nonprofit’s Liberty Avenue lodging facility. The gift marks yet another significant milestone in Family House’s mission to provide safe, affordable lodging for patients and their families undergoing medical treatment in Pittsburgh.
“Family House leadership had long envisioned the addition of a front porch to its new facility since purchasing the former hotel in 2021,” said Executive Director John Plante. “However, design planning and construction were postponed while the organization focused its resources and staff on transitioning its lodging, services, and programs into its new location.
“Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Kamins, Family House will now be able to move forward with constructing a beautiful new space for guests to gather and support one another while they are experiencing the challenges and stresses that accompany a medical crisis.”
A “front porch” was an iconic feature of Family House’s multiple locations prior to the organization’s consolidation into one facility, the former Shadyside Courtyard by Marriott. The structure, which will be designed by Kolano Design and named the “Kamin Conservatory,” will provide a new, four-season gathering space for Family House guests.
“Dan and I know, first-hand, what an essential role Family House plays in our community,” said Carole Kamin, Foundation President. “Years ago, our family directly benefited from the comfort and compassion that Family House has provided since its founding more than 41 years ago.
“We are grateful that this resource exists in support of our city’s world-class hospitals, and we are pleased to support the addition of this beautiful new conservatory.”
Located within convenient access to the region’s world-class medical care, the consolidated, 121-room Family House facility has been designed to strengthen interactions between patients, their caregivers, and regional healthcare partners through modern enhancements. The updated facility also helps meet the needs of an increasingly specialized population, including those who are immune-suppressed or undergoing long-term recovery from transplant surgeries, or cancer or stem cell treatments.
